The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Donatus

In Arezzo rises, imposing and majestic, the Cathedral dedicated to Saints Peter and Donato, an architectural work that alone tells centuries of history, art and religious devotion. This magnificent cathedral, built beginning in 1277 on the remains of an even older church, shows us in all its beauty the stylistic evolution from the original Romanesque to the dynamic Gothic, which occurred through the centuries between building and renovation work.

The Arezzo Cathedral: a masterpiece just steps from Antiche Mura

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Donatus – known locally simply as “the Duomo” – is one of the must-see landmarks when visiting the city of Arezzo. The building rises into the Aretine sky in all its iconic splendor, capturing the attention of visitors approaching the city.

This extraordinary architectural work was built – as often happened at the time – on the remains of a pre-existing church, used as the foundation for the construction that began in 1277 at the will of the then Bishop of the city (and military leader) Guglielmo degli Umbertini – the same general who led the Ghibelline army in the famous Battle of Campaldino, recounted and fought by Dante Alighieri himself, where Guglielmo lost his life in 1289.

Although construction of the Duomo did not stop completely after Guglielmo’s death, its continuation was undeniably long and difficult: officially completed in 1511, the reality is that the church was far from finished; it would take until 1863 to admire the structure as we see it today.

One of the essential monuments to visit in the beautiful city of Arezzo is its Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Donatus. It rises toward the clear Aretine sky and remains one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Before the construction of the present Cathedral, another church stood on the same site. The new building began in 1277, commissioned by Bishop Guglielmo. He was not only a religious figure but also a man of war, taking an active role in the Battle of Campaldino in 1289 against the Guelphs, where he sadly lost his life.

After Guglielmo’s death, construction of the Cathedral continued, though with long interruptions. We can say that its creation was lengthy and challenging: even though work officially ended in 1511, the Cathedral was still far from complete.

It would take until 1863 to see the final result.

The Cathedral and its different architectural styles

Because the Cathedral was built over several centuries, it displays a mix of architectural styles that overlap and intertwine. Beginning with the Romanesque style typical of the 13th century, the structure later evolved into the Gothic style, which made the building lighter and more vertical compared to the solid, heavy character of the earlier Romanesque.

The fact that the Cathedral was constructed over such a long period meant that it incorporated different styles. Starting in the 1200s, the dominant style was Romanesque; only later did it transition to Gothic, giving the church a more slender and elevated appearance.

In the 1300s, this stylistic shift became evident with the construction of very tall vaulted naves, which create a strong visual impact on visitors as they enter an almost otherworldly space, evoking the heavens and divine grandeur.

Unmistakable Gothic Style

Gothic elements appeared in the church from the 1300s, introducing unmistakable architectural features that created a strong sense of verticality. The three high naves are the first to capture attention as visitors step inside.

Another Gothic feature can be seen in the windows on the southern side of the Cathedral. These tall, narrow openings enhance the impression of height. Conversely, the exterior structure retains a more massive, Romanesque-like appearance compared to other Gothic churches.

Moving forward through the centuries, we cannot forget the stained-glass windows created by master glazier Guillaume de Marcillat, whose exceptional skill in the 16th century made him one of the most renowned artists in this field. In Arezzo, we can admire some of his finest work.

The artworks inside the church

We have explored the architectural significance of the Cathedral, but its interior also holds extraordinary artistic treasures.

As mentioned earlier, the remains of Bishop Guglielmo, its formal founder, are preserved here. He is not the only one to rest in this sacred place: Pope Gregory X, who died in Arezzo in 1276, is also buried here.

Inside, you will also find the tomb of Bishop Guido Tarlati. Elected bishop and later consecrated pope in 1313, his tomb features marble works attributed to Giotto.

Equally remarkable is the painting housed in the left nave, Mary Magdalene by Piero della Francesca, created in 1460. The large figure (190 x 105 cm) displays a sculptural style, dynamic form and complementary colors. It is considered a unique work for the artist, who typically preferred fresco cycles.
